| THE AUSTRIAN TEAM |
|

The Austrian national team
(from left to right) Rene Radinger, Christian Redl, Dieter
Baumann, Herbert Nitsch, Michael Karpf
|
Each team consists of three athletes plus
one team captain and reserve. Each athlete scores with
his points for the team result. For each athlete it is
mandatory to compete in both disciplines, static and constant.
In static (holding your breath as long as you can) you
announce your estimated performance but you can go further,
in constant weight (deep diving with pure fin power) you
announce your estimated performance too but this will
be the maximum you are allowed to dive.
Under this rules the national selection was done on Millstättersee,
on of the beautiful Austrian lakes. The team was classified
as follows: Herbert NITSCH, Dieter BAUMANN, Christian
REDL. As team captain Harald LAUTNER and for reserve Michael
KARPF and Rene RADINGER. Team captain Harald Lautner retired
one week before the championship and Dieter Baumann had
to be again athlete and team captain in one person. Additional
Dieter is Herbert's coach.

| TRAINING
DAYS - before the World championship |

Action around the training cable
|
During the week before the championship
the Austrian team members arrived one after the other.
At first Herbert and at last Rene. All the teams where
accommodated in Club Med near to Ibiza town. The first
to do was to rent a car to be independent, the second
to find a good training possibility for constant weight.
The Nautilus Dive Resort at Cala Vadella in front of the
rock of Es Vedra, the part of the Island where the official
competition would be, was the perfect choice. Every day
at noon they went out with a pneumatic boat, dropping
off scuba and free divers. Not only the Austrian's where
taking this chance to train every possible day. It was
always a big mix with Sweden, Belgium, Morocco, Finland
and Ireland.
|
One
of the funniest things was to see the eyes of Michael and
Rene, which where training the first time under conditions
like this. The boat dropped them two kilometres away from
the shore, where the water has finally 100m +, and disappeared
for the next hour. Waves and current raised the thrill of
the training session.
During this essential training's especially Herbert
could improve his performances with several dives over
-80m and one masterpiece of -89m.
Every morning, before they went out for constant training,
the Austrian's made a static training session in the
pool and most days a second one in the afternoon.

| INSCRIPTION DAY and
Parade - Friday, 5.October |

Opening ceremony with the big group picture
|
The starting day of the competition had
come and Club Med was really full with all the teams.
130 athletes plus accompanying captains and other persons
where running around in the Club saying halloo to each
other. Each team had to register and the athletes had
to show their medical certifications, passports and to
pay the fee.
At a first short captains meeting the timetable was given
for tonight and the next day.
In the late afternoon was an opening ceremony and big
parade showing all the different countries in Eivissa-Ibiza
town.

| OFFICIAL TRAINING - Saturday and
Sunday |

Entering the shuttle boat for the official training
|
Saturday and Sunday where the days for
the official constant weight training. This official training
has a strict timetable. One hour each day for each team.
The competitors where obliged unexpected to use a safety
lanyard for security reasons. A piece of rope with a carbine
on each end, one hooked in on the cable the second one on
the weight belt. Unfortunately the used piece of rope was
a transparent only 1,5mm nylon rope which guided to a lot
of problems. All the teams which had arrived on the training
beach had to wait at least, due to a not working timetable,
for 2 hours, the most of them already in their suits to
be punctual in any case for their training - barbecue time.
|
|
The Austrian team took their training,
checked out the competition boat and decided to not participate
the official training of the next day and do their on stuff.
During the night the weather became stormy and the training
was cancelled anyway. The only thing left to do was pool
training.
Sunday evening the team captains had to announce the depth
of each diver to the jury.

| CONSTANT WEIGHT DAY 1 - Christian's
attempt |
|

Christian returning from his -40 m dive
|
Christian's announcement of -40m did put
him in the first group. The weather was still stormy and
the organisation decided to change the place of the competition
to the other, more protected side of the island.
Christian and team captain Dieter arrived in the harbour
of St. Eulalia to change in their suits there and to go
with a shuttle boat to the competition zone. The transfer
was windy and very wet and at the end everybody had to jump
in the water to swim the last meters to the warm up boat.
The strong wind on the now wet dive suit made Christian
freeze very hard, not the best preconditions. Later, during
the warm up in the water, he could recover a little bit.
45 min after the beginning of the warm up time he was on
the competition table. A good start. With no signs of equalisation
problems he faded out of sight in about 30 meters. Soon
he faded back in, holding the tag in the hand. The last
meters, the exit. Some quiet seconds, then some movements
like electric shock waves running through Christians body,
a Loss Of Motor Control - disqualification, zero points.
Austria's chances for the rostrum where gone.

| CONSTANT WEIGHT DAY 2 - Day off
for the Austrian team |

after a good static training
|
|
Today the depths between 45 and 50 are
absolved. Nobody of the Austrian team has to dive. There
is enough time to train static in the pool, make a last
relaxed constant training and have a lot of talks with other
divers.
Of course new plans are made to reach still a good ranking
but Christian refused to train for a 8 min + static to gain
back his lost 40 points.

| CONSTANT WEIGHT DAY 3 - Dieter's
attempt |
|

Dieter on his way to the shuttle boat
|
Competition day three was Dieter's day.
Veteran of many competitions he was relatively calm but
this day he had a little problem to concentrate on his
breathing warm up routine. Accompanied by Michael, who
was the first time at world champs, he arrived at the
beach. The weather has become much better and the constant
competition took place where it was planned, at the rock
of Es Vedra. A pontoon to the shuttle boat kept everybody
dry and it was possible to get on the warm up boat without
jumping in the water. When it was time Dieter started
his water warm up. In the water Dieter became so relaxed
that he, already on the competition cable having the countdown,
took away the camera from Michael to make a picture of
a Canadian ascending on the second competition cable.
|
|
He dived down and reached the tag easy.
On his way back to the surface he just shocked the safety
dives when he stopped two times for some seconds just
to relax his leg muscles. A clear exit finalised -51m,
a new personal best.

|
| CONSTANT WEIGHT DAY 4 - Herbert's
attempt |
|

Herbert directly after his exit. One hand on the cable
in the other one the tag. He has done the unbelievable.
A constant weight world record during a competition.
|
The day with the highest tension has
come. The same question for everybody. Can Herbert dive
his announced depth of -86m what would mean a new world
record? He did sleep well the last night, is this a good
or bad sign? Arrived at the beach a lot of cameras recording
everything. Today only 17 divers will have their attempts,
a small and exclusive group. Shuttle boat, warm up boat,
30 minutes delay, wrong official time on the warm up boat,
water warm up, business as usual. Dieter, Herbert's coach
and team captain takes care of everything. Competition
cable. Dieter holds Herbert on the back as always in the
minutes before Herbert starts. Countdown is running, 30
seconds, 10, 5,4,3,2, start time!
Herbert pumps up the air in his lungs and there he goes.
With one hand on the nose for equalisation and the other
arm stretched out he disappears slowly in the blue. The
time passes by, the tension on the competition boat rises,
the safety freediver leaves to meet him at 20 meter.
|
|
With the arms over his head, tag fixed
between his hands, Herbert materialises back out of the
blue. Now will the hardest part come, the last meters
and the exit. Without problems he surfaces, takes a grip
at the cable, holding up the tag. The unbelievable is
done, a constant world record in competition. Congratulations
from everybody.

| RESERVE DAY - Friday, free for all
teams |
|

Sharanne Wheeler showing some underwater ballet scenes
|
The reserve day for constant was not used,
so all the teams had one day off. Herbert had to tell the
story of his world record to other athletes and media again
and again. Most of the teams took the chance to take some
pictures in and out of the water. Media everywhere. Rene,
the fifth Austrian team member became more and more the
team photographer. In the afternoon many teams made a last
small static training. Then another thrilling moment. The
static starting list with the time announcements was published.
There were two persons with 7 minutes on the list. Martin
Stepanec, current static world record holder with 8:06,
and Herbert, who did several static's over 8 min in the
last training days. A lot of discussing stuff for dinner.

|
| STATIC - Saturday the 13. October,
last day of the competition |
|

Static competition area. 5 zones, 5 athletes,
5 judges and a lot of media and spectators.
|
With busses all competitors where brought
to the swimming hall near Ibiza town. During static competition
always five athletes will have their attempts at the same
time. Starting order is from the shortest to the longest
announcements. Dieter was the first, then Christian and
at least in the last start group Herbert. Dieter gave a
low announcement for his time, so he had to compete first
and was finished and could take care of Christian and Herbert.
Classic opera music gave the competition the special touch.
Dieter and Christian made their attempts without problems,
afterwardss Herbert had to start his warm up. The team tactic
was clear. Herbert tries to get so much points as possible,
to give back the team the chance for a good ranking, and
if he will come to 7:45 he will try to go for a new world
record in nearly any case. When he entered the competition
zone, next to Martin Stepanec, everybody could feel the
tension in the hall. Start time. 5 minutes, 6 min - the
first control sign to the safety diver, Martin finishes
his attempt, 7 min, Herbert with both hands on the edge
of the swimming pool works already hard against the contractions,
the urge to breath. Dieter talks to him quietly counting
him down the last seconds to a new world record but Herbert
takes very abrupt his head out of the water. Deep fast breathing
and a very small uncontrolled shaking of the head. Dieter
tells Herbert immediately that the attempt probably will
not be valid because of a small loss of motor control but
everybody in the hall, especially the press acts like crazy.
The stopwatch shows 8:07, one second to less for a new world
record, the difference must be two seconds but nobody cares.
Later the decision of the jury that the attempt is not valid
- disqualification. The Austrians are ranking somewhere
but this day is unforgettable.

| CLOSING CEREMONY and party |
|

Women team Canada and men Italy
|
The big tent in Club Med was the place
for the closing ceremony. Herbert could not participate
because his plan back left already. Some speakers, some
videos and then the results. Canada women and Italy men
win. High spirits in the tent and never ending boring discussions
about some of the disqualification's of the day. The tent
became empty and then started two things. Big changing of
the team dresses and the foam party in the disco. For the
party see the pictures, they tell you more than thousand
words, for the ranking of the Austrian team take a look
in the future in Greece 2003, there Austria will be on the
victory rostrum placed as...
