Apnea Icehockey
by Jaromir Foukal

I would like, if I may, take you on a ice-cold journey. It began all some years ago. My training partner Dieter Baumann and I are sometimes very loony freedivers and so we were on the search for a special place to have our obsession.

Cyprus 2003 - SFOC
Howard's Game

It is very easy. You find a place where the visibility is 40m + with a friendly water temperature. You take a professional dive barge for Constant weight, a hotel with swimming pool for Static and find somewhere near a sport pool for Dynamic. You write out the event as open individual so that everybody is able to participate. You call this event Sony Freediver Open Classic and wait for the inscriptions. No, of course not easy, instead a lot of work for Howard and his Crew, nicknamed monkeys.

World record regulations
a look into regulations and homologations

We all know the headline - New Freediving Worldrecord.

Who is Carlos Coste
or can this man break world records?

Venezuela, coastline with Jurassic Park feeling, cars with 6 litres or more cubic capacity and a full tank for eight bucks. Fast food impressions. Out of the city no more asphalt, winding roads through the mountains just wide enough for one car. After two hours of jumping around with the car a small fishing village with sand beach. Fairytale feelings. Houses with high walls, each one in varied colours, radiating a comfortable kind of welcome.
Inside the house simple, clean and cosy. A first hello with Carlos and some other Venezuelan freedivers. Appointment for a training session tomorrow.

FREE IMMERSION - 92 m green experiences -
the coach view, by Dieter Baumann

Again we are sitting in Herbert's BMW driving to a new world record attempt. Sonja, Herbert's girlfriend, already gave up to follow our discussions about equalisation techniques, how slow or how fast to descent respectively to ascent, and is taking a nap on the backseat of the car. We arrive very late in the afternoon at the place of the attempt, lake Millstätter and hurry up to get in the water. Out at the platform I check at first the cable. As several times before it is tangled on -25m with one of the anchor lines of the platform.

Tarzan, Buddha, Galileo

About ten years ago, when Sebastién Nagel, today president of A.I.D.A. International, was still a swimmer, Guy Ackermann did meet him by chance at a swimming competition. There Guy told him the first time about the right breathing technique. Years later they did meet again by chance but this time at an apnea competition.

Coaching the Austrian dive machine -
an inside view of Herbert Nitsch's - 72 m constant ballast record

A phone call of Herbert started everything. Hallo Dieter, I did like your work as captain / coach for our national team during the World Cup round of Montreaux very much. Do you like to coach me for my constant ballast/freshwater world record? Yes, of course, was my instant answer.

Herbert, the Austrian dive machine, sets new world records:

Herbert Nitsch, a former swimmer, achieved the first ever Austrian WORLD RECORD in one of the eleven Apnea disciplines. Beating the old record by 6meters, he did a131meter dive in Dynamic without fins. A competition in Geneva/Switzerland, the Dolphins Cup, was the frame for his record. The 25m pool the place. This meant 5 laps and six meters to improve a since 1993 unbeaten record.
